A Delhi Police constable became the latest victim of cyber fraud when a seemingly mundane call ended up costing him his hard-earned money. The caller, posing as a bank official, warned, 'Sir, your card's reward points will expire today. Redeem them soon to cash in.' Before the constable realized, he was swindled out of 170,000 rupees.
According to an English daily, the cyber scam targeted a Head Constable assigned to the Railway's Information Rights Cell. The scammer, claiming to be an agent from a private bank, convinced the constable that his reward points were about to expire and urged him to act quickly to redeem them.
The conniving scammer instructed the constable to download a specific app to convert his reward points into cash. Upon installing the app and entering his details, a flood of messages began to arrive on the constable's phone.
These messages were alerts of transactions being deducted from his bank account. The constable was shocked to see a total of 170,000 rupees gradually siphoned from his account and immediately reported the incident to the police. The cybercrime unit is now thoroughly investigating the case.
