The Government of India has responded to a recent statement by Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama, addressing succession and the future of the Dalai Lama institution. In this context, Randhir Jaiswal, spokesperson for the Ministry of External Affairs, has released an official statement.
Randhir Jaiswal remarked that they have seen reports about the Dalai Lama’s comments on the ongoing continuity of the institution. The Indian government does not take a position on matters of faith and tradition and abstains from making comments on such issues. He further emphasized that the government has consistently supported religious freedom for all its citizens, a principle it will continue to uphold.

In fact, discussions on the Dalai Lama’s successor have gained momentum globally. Despite the presence of the Tibetan exile government and a large community of Tibetan refugees in India, the Indian government has maintained neutrality, focusing solely on the principle of religious freedom.
China's objection raised
Earlier, China expressed its objection to a statement by Union Minister Kiren Rijiju, where he stated the successor to the Dalai Lama should be determined according to his wishes. China demanded India to handle the matter sensitively.

In his statement, Rijiju claimed that the decision on the Dalai Lama's successor is entirely his prerogative. Meanwhile, India reiterated its position, asserting that it does not interfere in religious matters and will continue to respect the religious freedom provided by the Constitution.
