This is Sharma’s first foray into an electoral battle. So far, he has been managing responsibilities as the representative for Raebareli’s MP. His proximity to Sonia Gandhi is well recognized.

K.L. Sharma's full name is Kishori Lal Sharma, and he is considered a close confidante of the Gandhi family. Originally from Ludhiana, Punjab, Sharma stepped into Raebareli and Amethi with Rajiv Gandhi in 1983. Following Rajiv Gandhi’s sudden demise, his relationship with the Gandhi family became familial, and he became integral to their circle.
K.L. Sharma's active involvement in Raebareli and Amethi
After Rajiv Gandhi’s death in 1991, Sharma took over the functions occasionally managed by Sheila Kaul and assisted Satish Sharma. Consequently, his presence in both Raebareli and Amethi became a constant. However, when Sonia Gandhi entered active politics and contested from Amethi, K.L. Sharma came along with her. Eventually, when Sonia Gandhi vacated the Amethi seat for Rahul Gandhi and shifted to Raebareli, Sharma embraced the responsibilities for both constituencies.
Loyalty Pays Off for K.L. Sharma
As time passed, while many distanced themselves from Congress, Sharma’s loyalty never wavered. His credibility within the Gandhi family remained unshaken.
Sharma has served as the in-charge for Bihar, been a member of the Punjab Committee, and also held a position in the ICC. At times, he was at the helm of election campaigns. His close proximity to the Gandhi family has now been rewarded with the Amethi candidacy.
Today Marks the Final Day of Nominations
In the upcoming 2024 Lok Sabha elections, today marks the final day for nomination in Raebareli and Amethi. Congress has declared K.L. Sharma as the candidate from Amethi, while Rahul Gandhi will contest from Raebareli. Preparations for the nomination of both candidates have been completed.
