The late Ram Vilas Paswan, Chirag's father, was a political stalwart, contesting in the Lok Sabha elections 11 times and securing victories in nine. He worked with six prime ministers and was a minister five times, handling ministries under three PMs. His son, Chirag Paswan, in this term, joins the central government as a minister for the first time, even though he has won parliamentary elections thrice but had not been minister until now. This time, Narendra Modi has shown trust in him.
Chiraj Wins Election from His Father Ram Vilas Paswan's Hajipur Seat
Before his political foray, Chirag Paswan was an actor in Bollywood. Currently, he leads the Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) and is the son of the departed MP and Union Minister, Ram Vilas Paswan. Until 2019, he represented the constituency of Jamui in Bihar and has now accomplished a victory from the Hajipur seat in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, a seat long contested by his father.
Tried His Luck in Films
Born on October 31, 1982, in Delhi, Chirag pursued a graduate degree in Engineering. He acted alongside Kangana Ranaut in a Hindi movie, 'Miley Naa Miley Hum' in 2011. After testing his fate in films, he stepped into Bihar politics, contesting for Jumui constituency in 2014 on behalf of the Lok Janshakti Party, where he defeated his closest rival Sudhanshu Shekhar Bhaskar by more than 85,000 votes.
Chirag's First Lok Sabha Victory was from Jamui
Chirag managed to retain his seat in the 2019 elections as well. With a total of 528,771 votes, he overcame his closest competitor Bhudeo Choudhary. He had run for the same constituency where his father, Ram Vilas Paswan, marked victories from the Hajipur constituency through the Lok Janshakti Party.
Following Ram Vilas Paswan's Passing, Uncle Parted Ways with Chirag
Following the demise of Ram Vilas Paswan, Pashupati Kumar Paras declared himself as the LJP's leader in the Lok Sabha on June 14, 2021, replacing his nephew Chirag. The next day, Chirag expelled five rebel MPs, including his uncle Pashupati Kumar Paras and cousin Prince Raj, for anti-party activities. Subsequently, the Lok Janshakti Party split into factions with both sides striving to establish themselves as the rightful heir of Ram Vilas Paswan until the 2024 elections.
Uncle and Nephew Both Claimed the Hajipur Seat
Prior to the 2024 general elections, Pashupati Paras and Chirag Paswan both staked their claims on the Hajipur seat. As both parties were part of the NDA, efforts were made to resolve the deadlock before the 18th Lok Sabha elections, resulting in the NDA granting five seats in Bihar to Chirag's party, showcasing his electoral triumph.
