Following US President Donald Trump's imposition of tariffs on China, Canada, and Mexico, these nations have responded decisively. While Canada and Mexico have declared retaliatory tariffs on US goods, China has opted to take its concerns to the WTO. Trump's plan includes a 25 percent tariff on imports from Canada and Mexico and a 10 percent tariff on Chinese goods.
China to Lodge Complaint with WTO
China announced its decision to proceed with a case against US tariffs at the World Trade Organization. The Chinese Ministry of Commerce released a statement declaring their firm opposition and condemnation of the additional 10 percent tariffs imposed by the US on Chinese goods. China intends to take this matter to the WTO and will enact appropriate countermeasures to safeguard its interests.
Canada's Retaliation Against Tariffs
Meanwhile, Canada has also taken retaliatory action against the US tariffs, deciding to impose a 25 percent tariff on $155 billion worth of US imports. Acting Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau made this announcement. Immediately after Trump's proclamation, Trudeau tweeted about his upcoming conversation with Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum and mentioned initial discussions with his cabinet on this matter.
Trudeau stated, 'We didn't want this, but Canada is ready.' In a news conference, Trudeau highlighted that these tariffs violate the free trade agreement established a few years ago and warned of severe repercussions for the American public.
Mexico’s Response to US Tariffs
Mexico has also countered President Donald Trump's tariffs by imposing tariffs of its own. On Saturday, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum announced that following the US's tariff imposition on Mexican goods, she instructed her economy minister to implement tariff and non-tariff measures to defend Mexico's interests. Sheinbaum expressed in a post on platform X that her government seeks cooperation and dialogue rather than confrontation with America. The leftist leader has consistently attempted to diffuse tensions with US President Donald Trump.
