In a tragic turn of events, an old iron bridge in the Kundmala area, near Talegaon Dabhade in Pune's Mawal Tehsil, gave way under the relentless force of nature this Sunday. Situated over the Indrayani River, the bridge had been closed to vehicular traffic for months, yet it remained accessible, drawing tourists and locals eager to witness the river's swelling waters from recent downpours. Tragically, this decision proved fatal for five individuals.
Following Pune's orange alert for heavy rainfall, popular tourist destinations like Bhushi Dam and Lonavala in Mawal Tehsil were ordered to shut down last week until August 31st. This closure pushed tourists towards other nearby spots.
The allure of a flowing river on a Sunday attracted a crowd of about 100 to 120 curious onlookers to the scene. Some even ventured onto the bridge with their motorbikes, further burdening its structure until it could take no more, leading to a disastrous collapse.

Incessant rains had swelled the river, prompting swift action from local police, firefighters, and NDRF teams who began rescue operations promptly. Local MLA Sunil Shelke reported five fatalities, while an unquantified number are still trapped. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis expressed concern, stating, "Many are stranded. NDRF teams are en route. I can't confirm casualty numbers yet. Authorities are doing everything necessary."

Despite a three-month closure to traffic, tourists continued to visit the historically compromised structure, already weakened by the elements. The river surged with unchecked fury, taking the bridge down amidst growing concerns of approximately 25 to 30 missing amidst the waters.
Rescued: 5 to 6 Saved from the Waters
In the wake of the disaster, local police and district authorities swiftly initiated a rescue maneuver. According to law enforcement, rescues have uncovered 5 to 6 survivors, though 10 to 15 remain out of sight. The area, under Pimpri-Chinchwad police jurisdiction, sees collaborative efforts with NDRF Continuously aimed at saving lives.
