The catastrophic plane crash in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, involving an Air India Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner tragically increased the death toll to 270. Authorities successfully completed DNA profiling of 9 deceased bodies, matching their DNA samples with their families for confirmation. Relief Commissioner Alok Kumar Pandey and Civil Hospital's Additional Superintendent Dr. Rajneesh Patel shared these updates in a joint press conference.
The officials mentioned that the hospital has released the first body to the respective family, while other bodies will follow after completing all necessary legal formalities. Previously, 8 bodies were identified by families without DNA profiling due to their intact conditions. Out of 242 passengers, only one survived the crash, alongside 29 other victims at the crash site, including 5 MBBS students. State and central agencies have collaborated effectively.
Commissioner Pandey highlighted contact has been made with families across 18 out of 33 districts in Gujarat. A total of 230 teams have been set up. The process of handing over bodies to families commenced on Saturday. Families were required to bring identification when providing DNA samples. To ensure a smooth process for families, AMC swiftly issued death certificates.
For each deceased's family, a dedicated team has been established to transport bodies via ambulance to their homes. Contact has also been established with 11 international families, and they are expected to arrive in Ahmedabad by tomorrow afternoon. The British High Commission is actively engaged in Ahmedabad, maintaining communication with all agencies involved. Meanwhile, Dr. Rajneesh Patel noted that the sole surviving passenger, Vishwas Kumar, is recovering well.
