Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, a senior leader of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), said on Saturday that Sheikh Hasina's extradition would not disrupt relations between the two nations. In an exclusive conversation with Aaj Tak, Fakhrul Islam maintained that any action regarding Hasina's extradition would be in line with proper legal procedures and international rules. He stated, 'Bangladesh has already requested India's extradition of Sheikh Hasina. This will be conducted according to prevailing international laws.'

Sheikh Hasina has resided in New Delhi since August 2024, following her resignation amid violent student protests against her government. In November 2025, the International Tribunal for Crimes in Bangladesh sentenced her to death for crimes against humanity, a trial conducted in her absence without her defense.

When asked if a future BNP government would officially request Hasina's extradition, Fakhrul Islam reiterated that the process would adhere to established legal frameworks. He acknowledged the existing extradition treaty between Bangladesh and India and expressed a desire for her return. The BNP leader emphasized that Hasina's extradition would not become a stumbling block in India-Bangladesh relations.

He affirmed, 'This will not obstruct relations between Bangladesh and India. India has never denied granting asylum to Sheikh Hasina or stated her extradition to Bangladesh wouldn't occur.' Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, one of BNP's most senior leaders and a close confidant of Tarique Rahman, steered the party during Rahman's years in exile in England.

Notably, after the student protests of 2024, the BNP secured a significant victory in Bangladesh’s parliamentary election. Sheikh Hasina’s Awami League was barred from participating by the interim government. Previously, another BNP leader, Salauddin Ahmed, mentioned their party's intent to persistently raise the issue of Hasina's return through legal and diplomatic channels with India.
