A major development has emerged in the multi-million chit fund scam investigation in Bengal. On Sunday, the Asansol District Court ordered a 10-day police custody of Tahseen Ahmed, the son of a senior leader from the Trinamool Congress's minority branch. Ahmed was arrested late Saturday night by the Asansol North Thana Police near Chandrachoor Temple on NH-19, as he attempted to flee towards Jharkhand.
According to police sources, gold and silver jewelry worth millions have been recovered from Tahseen Ahmed. Authorities suspect this jewelry was bought with money swindled from the chit fund scheme, which defrauded hundreds of investors in Asansol and surrounding districts.
The investigative officers requested a 14-day police custody to interrogate the accused and trace the scam's money trail. However, after hearing arguments from both sides, the court granted a 10-day remand.
Defense lawyer Syed Rehan alleged several procedural discrepancies in the police investigation. He stated that the police did not allow his client the opportunity to examine or verify documents related to the seized gold and silver. Rehan also claimed that a mandatory notice, as per Supreme Court directives, was not issued before the arrest.
Meanwhile, police officials have called Tahseen Ahmed's arrest a 'significant success' and stated that further arrests could follow as the investigation progresses. After the incident, the Trinamool Congress leadership distanced itself from the accused, issuing a statement affirming no connection with his activities and that the law will take its course.
This arrest has stirred the entire region, with investors who were defrauded now hoping that the investigation will fully uncover the network behind the scam, bringing them justice.
