The incident of two young girls in Basti district becoming mothers after being assaulted has left the community in shock. In the town police station area, a 14-year-old girl was taken to a field by a local minor, where she fell victim and became pregnant.
The second incident from Khodare police station area is even more distressing, where a 13-year-old was violated by her cousin within the confines of her home. Both culprits are also minors. Following the victims' complaints, the police have registered FIRs, leading to the arrest and jailing of both accused.
Priced Honor at Just 20 Rupees
The Khodare incident, on the Basti-Gonda border, is particularly disturbing. Here, a 13-year-old girl from the Muslim community was assaulted by her cousin. When the girl became pregnant and her family confronted the accused's family, instead of seeking justice, they attempted to trivialize the incident by offering a mere 20 rupees to settle the affair. Despite this inhumane approach, the victim gave birth to her child at a medical college and now embraces motherhood at a very young age.
Denial and Societal Scorn
In the other case, when the field assault upon the young girl became known six months into her pregnancy, the accused's family flatly refused to acknowledge the child. Faced with societal judgement and an uncertain future, the girl decided to proceed with the birth. After delivering at Basti Medical College, she now cares for her infant. Both accused are rightly ensnared by the law.
