Azam Khan: Bail Granted But Why The Delay?

Despite bail from the Allahabad High Court, Azam Khan's release faced several days of delay due to unissued warrants under added sections. On September 20, the court dismissed the additional sections filed by Rampur police. He is expected to be released soon following the court's clarification.

The question of why senior Samajwadi Party leader Azam Khan, despite receiving bail in the 'Quality Bar' case from the Allahabad High Court, faced several days of delayed release is on many minds. The issue is linked to FIR No. 126/2020 registered by the Rampur police, which included additional charges under sections 467, 471, and 201 concerning a five-year-old enemy property dispute against Azam Khan.

The delay in releasing Azam Khan from prison after bail was primarily because his warrant under these increased sections could not be issued. During the hearing on September 20, the court did not accept these sections, leaving the new warrant issued by the police without validity. Therefore, the jail administration could not immediately release Azam Khan even after receiving the discharge order.

The increased sections registered by Rampur Police caused disruptions in Azam Khan's prison release. However, during the September 20 hearing, the court dismissed the additional sections, clearing the path for his release.

Following this controversy, the release order for Azam Khan has reached Sitapur Jail, and he will be freed as soon as the prison opens. This highlights the lack of coordination between judicial processes and police actions, leading to the delay. Now that the court has clarified its position, it is expected that he will be out by Tuesday morning.

What's the Complete Story?

Azam Khan's 'Quality Bar' case from the Rampur district in Uttar Pradesh has been quite contentious. It is alleged that Azam Khan illegally transferred and captured the land of Quality Bar in the Civil Lines area of Rampur to his wife Tazeen Fatima and son Abdullah Azam's names during his ministerial tenure in 2013.

In 2019, owner Gagan Arora lodged a complaint leading to an FIR where numerous family members of Azam Khan were accused. In 2024, Azam Khan was declared the main accused in the case. Allegations surfaced that he used his position and political influence improperly to seize land, posing legal and ethical questions. Azam Khan, along with his wife Tazeen Fatima and son Abdullah Azam, faces accusations in this case.

In May 2025, the MP-MLA Court in Rampur rejected Azam Khan's bail plea, but later, in September 2025, the Allahabad High Court granted bail. The bail was given as the prosecution failed to present strong evidence and delays in the case were considered. Currently, he is incarcerated in Sitapur Jail, Uttar Pradesh.
