With the national elections just around the corner, the political atmosphere is reaching a fever pitch. In the midst of this, Assam's Chief Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma, launches another jibe at Congress.
He claims that voting for Congress is pointless as even victorious members would defect to BJP, casting doubt on the enduring allegiance of Congress members since everyone seems to prefer BJP.
In a meeting with party activists in Karimganj district, he stated that no Congress candidate wishes to stay with the party; they all aspire to join BJP. Except for one, he promises to bring all victorious Congress candidates into the BJP fold.
He further mentioned that this time, even Congress workers and supporters will vote for Prime Minister Narendra Modi in acknowledgement of the development work being done for the minorities. Minority youth are obtaining jobs without bribes, aligning them more with BJP, which is expected to claim victories in seats like Karimganj and Nagaon as well.
Last month, two Congress legislators in Assam pledged support for the BJP-led government of Himanta. His ally, Minister Piyush Hazarika, claimed this brought the number of Congress legislators supporting their government to four, forecasting more support in the future.
Note that the Election Commission announced the dates for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections last week. The elections will transpire over seven phases starting April 19, concluding with the vote count on June 4, with UP, Bihar, and West Bengal voting in all phases.
