Congress candidate Kishori Lal Sharma, engaged in the electoral battle for the revered Amethi Lok Sabha seat, proclaims himself a staunch 'servant' of the Gandhi family. He reverently states that the constituency is a precious trust held by Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, ready to be returned upon their request – a symbol of their legacy safeguarded under his care.

At a recent political rally in Musafirkhana within Amethi, Sharma expressed, "This land is a sacred trust from Rahul and Priyanka Gandhi, a heritage that I am entrusted with. Whenever the family seeks its return, I shall willingly comply."

The Congress has fielded Sharma against BJP's Smriti Irani, the incumbent MP and Union Minister. His candidacy follows Rahul Gandhi's loss in the 2019 elections to Irani which led to his shift to Wayanad. For the upcoming 2024 elections, Rahul has filed nominations from Rae Bareli, neighboring Amethi.

"The Gandhi family never viewed Amethi merely through the political lens, but rather as their home and family," Sharma said. "I have been connected to this family as a 'servant' since 1983. Ever since I was 22 years old, I've been serving the people of Amethi."

Kishori Lal Sharma continued, "I am a 'servant' to the Gandhi family, a 'servant' to Amethi, and will always be a 'servant.' It was the family's directive that I run in this election. However, I still regard myself as a 'servant' at heart."

Sharma labeled the current election as a battle for democracy and constitutional preservation, criticizing the last five years of development setbacks in Amethi. Initiatives like the Information Technology Institute, a paper mill, and a mega food park have been relocated away, and the much-anticipated Amethi-Unchahar railway project stands canceled.

While focusing on the escalating unemployment in the country, he critiqued the government's Agnipath scheme as deceiving the youth and playing with their futures.

Sharma also commented on the BJP's claim of providing a five-kilo ration to people yet neglecting to address the issue of stray animals devastating farmers' crops and leading to significant losses. He urged votes for Congress to contribute to the protection of democracy and the constitution.

It is to be noted that Kishori Lal Sharma has represented former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, ex-Congress President Sonia Gandhi, and Rahul Gandhi in Amethi. Hailing from Ludhiana, Punjab, Sharma has dedicated over four decades to serving the family. The voting in Amethi for the fifth phase is scheduled for May 20.
