The stage is set for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, as Samajwadi Party's chief and former Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav confirms his candidacy, poised to showcase his political prowess. This time, he sets his sights on the parliamentary constituency of Kannauj, after contesting from Azamgarh in 2019. Currently a legislator for the Mainpuri district's Karhal seat, he now turns to the historically significant Kannauj territory, once again pitting himself against the BJP's Subrat Pathak, who defeated Akhilesh's wife Dimple Yadav in the last elections.
Kannauj has been the heart of the fragrance industry for centuries, with its economy firmly rooted in the production of perfumes. Ancient narrow streets are lined with scent shops and stands, and Akhilesh has already represented the constituency multiple times as an MP before his stint as Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh in 2012. In essence, Akhilesh initiated his political career from Kannauj in 2000 after a by-election caused by his father Mulayam Singh's resignation.
'When Mulayam held Akhilesh's hand and declared...'
Back in 1999, Mulayam contested and won the Lok Sabha elections from both Kannauj and Sambhal. He relinquished the Kannauj seat, setting up the political platform for his son, Akhilesh. After winning the by-election, Akhilesh secured his position as MP for Kannauj in both 2004 and 2009. His resignation from the MP role upon becoming Chief Minister in 2012 further solidified the Yadav family's hold over this electoral bastion.
Why SP had to change its candidate at the last moment?
A mere three days prior, SP nominated Tej Pratap Yadav for the seat, but local resistance forced a strategic retreat. Party workers insisted on a more robust candidate to battle the BJP, and Akhilesh emerged as the unequivocal answer. He has been seen as a likely candidate for Kannauj for some time, well-regarded by constituents for his previous tenures.
Kannauj now gears up for a nail-biting showdown
Akhilesh's decision to enter the fray in 2024 has charged the local political scene with anticipation. Kannauj's electoral demographics showcase significant Muslim and Yadav populations, with emerging prospects for the SP. The BJP, holding the majority of Assembly segments, faces a formidable challenge from a revitalized opposition.
