Following a defeat in the Lok Sabha elections, Maharashtra's Deputy CM Ajit Pawar's wife, Sunetra Pawar, is now advancing towards the Rajya Sabha. With NCP leader Praful Patel tendering his resignation, the vacant Rajya Sabha seat is poised to welcome Sunetra as its new member. Her nomination has been filed for the upper house.

Sunetra Pawar contested from Maharashtra's Baramati seat, standing against Sharad Pawar's daughter Supriya Sule. Ultimately Supriya emerged victorious over Sunetra by a margin of nearly 150,000 votes. After the Lok Sabha defeat, Ajit Pawar is now preparing to facilitate Sunetra Pawar's entry into the Rajya Sabha.

Importantly, NCP leader Praful Patel has resigned from his Rajya Sabha seat. With approximately four years remaining in the term of the seat he vacated, the Election Commission announced in February that the election to fill this Rajya Sabha position is scheduled to occur.

What were the Baramati Lok Sabha seat outcomes?

Traditionally a stronghold of the Pawar family, Baramati Lok Sabha constituency saw Sharad Pawar emerge victorious in 1991. Between 1991 and 2004, Sharad Pawar was elected MP five consecutive times there. In 2009, his daughter Supriya Sule won the constituency and has been re-elected ever since. This year, she faced Sunetra Pawar, Ajit Pawar's wife, who lost to Supriya by roughly 150,000 votes. Supriya Sule received 7.32 lakh votes compared to Sunetra Pawar's 5.73 lakh votes.
