India's National Security Advisor (NSA) Ajit Doval met with Russian President Vladimir Putin at the Kremlin on Thursday. This meeting came at a time when U.S. President Donald Trump announced a hefty 50% tariff on India as a response to its purchase of Russian oil.
According to the Kremlin press service, India and Russia have agreed to bolster their strategic partnership during a bilateral security dialogue. This dialogue took place at a time when the Trump administration ordered an additional 25% tariff on goods arriving from India, totalling a 50% tariff on Indian imports.
Moreover, the U.S. has issued a warning that if Russia doesn't end the ongoing conflict in Ukraine—now reaching its fourth year—by Friday, it might impose secondary sanctions on countries purchasing Russian oil. The tariffs on India will come into effect in two phases. The first 25% took effect on August 7, with the second phase starting 21 days later, on August 27.
India's Strong Reaction
India has labeled the tariff as unfortunate and unfair, announcing its intent to protect its interests. Foreign Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal described it as unfair and inconsistent, stating that India will take all necessary steps to safeguard its economic sovereignty.
America's Double Standards
It's noteworthy that America faces allegations of double standards, as it continues to import Russian uranium hexafluoride, palladium, and fertilizers.
PM Modi's Firm Stand
During an event, Prime Minister Narendra Modi made a significant statement in support of the nation's farmers. PM Modi asserted that protecting the interests of farmers is India's utmost priority. He emphasized that India will never compromise on the rights of farmers, fishermen, and dairy farmers. They understand the high price they might need to pay for this stance, and they are prepared for it.
