Following uproar over remarks about the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Nishikant Dubey took aim at SY Quraishi on Sunday, calling him not an election commissioner but a 'Muslim Commissioner'. Previously, Quraishi had criticized the Waqf (Amendment) Act, labeling it as a dreadful government ploy to seize Muslim lands.
Quraishi Raised Concerns on Waqf Law
SY Quraishi, a former Chief Election Commissioner, held office from July 30, 2010, to June 10, 2012. A day prior, BJP MP Dubey had launched a sharp attack on the Supreme Court and the country's Chief Justice Sanjiv Khanna, holding them accountable for a 'religious war' in India. Subsequently, the BJP distanced itself from his controversial statement, calling it Dubey's personal opinion.
On April 17, Quraishi posted on X, alleging that the Waqf Act is a dreadful plan by the government to usurp Muslim lands. He expressed confidence that the Supreme Court would question this. The propaganda machinery has adeptly disseminated misinformation.
'You Made Bangladeshis Voters'
Reacting to the post, BJP MP Dubey stated on Sunday that Quraishi wasn't acting as an election commissioner but rather as a Muslim commissioner. During his tenure, most Bangladeshi infiltrators were turned into voters in Jharkhand's Santhal Pargana. He claimed that Islam arrived in India in 712 AD, and prior to that, the land was connected to Hindus, tribals, Jains, or Buddhists.

Nishikant Dubey declared that Bakhtiyar Khilji burned down his village Vikramshila in 1189, which had given the world its first Chancellor in the form of Atish Dipankar. He called for uniting the country and reading the history. Pakistan was created by dividing; now, there will be no further divisions. Nishikant Dubey has been elected four times as a Lok Sabha MP from Godda, Jharkhand.
Uproar Over Dubey's Statement
BJP MP Nishikant Dubey accused the Supreme Court of overstepping its boundaries. He stated that the Court is repealing laws passed by Parliament and even directing the President, who appoints Supreme Court judges. He asserted that under Article 368, making laws is Parliament's job, while the court's role is to interpret the law. He questioned whether Parliament should be shut down if the Supreme Court is to handle every task. Furthermore, Dubey asked why new laws are being created by the Supreme Court when everything else already has legal frameworks.

The BJP may have distanced itself from Nishikant Dubey's statement, but it has sparked a political storm. There are calls for contempt action against Dubey. Meanwhile, Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav reacted by stating that BJP members are responsible for inciting religious frenzy and caste conflicts. He accused the BJP of following a 'divide and rule' strategy and causing divisions in the name of religion or caste. Akhilesh commented that if BJP had won 400 seats, the streets would have been rife with swords and rifles.
