The Opposition India Bloc has initiated a no-confidence motion in the Rajya Sabha seeking the removal of Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar. Led by Jairam Ramesh, Congress and other opposition MPs submitted the proposal to the Secretary-General of Rajya Sabha under Article 67(b) of the Constitution on Tuesday. Jairam Ramesh has since explained their stance.
He stated that this is not a personal matter. Our voices have been raised solely against the disrespect shown to Opposition leaders. Jairam Ramesh further mentioned that MPs from various parties including Aam Aadmi Party, Samajwadi Party, Trinamool Congress, Shiv Sena (UBT), Nationalist Congress Party (Sharad Pawar), Jharkhand Mukti Morcha, and DMK have endorsed this motion. He noted that 60 MPs have signed the no-confidence motion.
Congress Rajya Sabha member Jairam Ramesh claimed that the government does not want the House to function. He accused Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju of intending to prevent the Rajya Sabha from operating, allegedly stating this in front of the Rajya Sabha Chairman and JP Nadda. In a meeting of floor leaders, Rijiju reportedly said that when you (Opposition) raise the Adani issue in the Lok Sabha, we (the ruling party) will not let the Rajya Sabha function.

Jairam Ramesh blamed the ruling party for the ongoing parliamentary deadlock, stating that it has become clear that the government does not want Parliament to conduct its business. Before this, after submitting the no-confidence motion to remove the Vice President to the Secretary-General of the Rajya Sabha, Jairam Ramesh posted about it on the social media platform X.

Jairam Ramesh described the decision to bring a no-confidence motion against the Vice President as distressing. He argued that the Chairman has been conducting the proceedings in a highly partisan manner, and the parties in the India Bloc had no other option but to bring forth this motion. This step has been taken in the interest of parliamentary democracy.
