Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli are currently active only in the ODI format. The duo had also retired from T20 International cricket after the 2024 T20 World Cup. Former Indian cricketer Robin Uthappa has raised concerns about their exit from Test cricket. When the iconic pair suddenly announced their retirement in May, it sent shockwaves through the cricketing world. At present, 'Ro-Koh' are representing India only in ODIs.
Were Ro-Koh Forced to Retire from Tests?
In a video on his YouTube channel, Robin Uthappa asserted that the retirement from Test cricket by Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli doesn't appear natural. He mentioned that the real reason behind this abrupt decision is for the players themselves to elaborate on, but it certainly feels like a compelled move.
Uthappa stated, 'I'm unsure if this was a forced surrender or not, but it doesn't seem like a voluntary farewell. The truth will emerge when they are ready to share, but it doesn't feel like a natural choice.'
The sudden retirement of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli from Test cricket was startling. Following last year's poor performance in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia, both players returned to the Ranji Trophy intending to prolong their Test careers. However, they mysteriously bid adieu to Test cricket in May. During this period, before the Test series against England, Shubman Gill was appointed as the new Test captain.
Uthappa further commented, 'When Rohit was struggling during the Australia tour, I felt he should take a six-month break to work on his fitness. I was confident he would make a remarkable comeback in Tests, but that did not transpire.'
