First Act: CCTV Cameras Smashed
By 12:35 PM at Nakhasa Chowk in Sambhal, a mob of 150-200 had demolished CCTV cameras. Subsequently, armed with hockey sticks, staves, and stones, they commenced their lethal attack on the police. Notable culprits such as Gulbadeen, Sultan, Hassan, Munna, son of Jabbar, and Faizan, Samad, amongst others, along with an anonymous mass, assaulted officers with the intent to kill, before setting their vehicle aflame.
Despite being unable to snatch police pistols, the mob successfully fled with a magazine containing ten rounds of cartridges. This relentless assault left several officers injured.
'We Won't Allow Any Survey in Our Mosque'
The FIR details that chants erupted from the crowd– 'Hassan, Azeem, Saleem, Rehan, Haider, Wasim, Ayaan... Disarm these officers, torch them, let nobody escape, we will not permit any survey within our mosque.' The crowd was intent on causing serious harm as they persistently fired at the officers.
By approximately 8:45 AM, an assembly of 800 to 900 had gathered at the slope of Jama Masjid. Initially, they began with slogans and soon escalated to stone-pelting. Despite multiple warnings from the police to disperse, the crowd remained defiant.
The FIR further chronicles the crowd's attempts to grab the sub-inspector’s government-issued pistol. When unsuccessful, they seized the pistol's magazine before escaping. Concurrently, the crowd maintained a continuous threat by firing at law enforcement officials. Amid this turmoil, the survey team remained stranded in the mosque, prompting the need for additional forces. The crowd had even looted tear gas canisters.
