In a remarkable move, a Gram Panchayat in the Latur district of Maharashtra has passed a proposal where children will forfeit their inheritance if they do not care for their elderly parents. According to the proposal, neglecting elderly parents will result in sons and daughters-in-law losing their inherited property rights. Deputy Sarpanch Satish Sindalkar shared that this decision was enacted in the Yerol Gram Panchayat meeting, Shirur-Anantpal Tehsil.

The meeting was graced by village head Sukumar Lokre, along with an agriculture assistant, a village development officer, and local residents. Village Development Officer Keshav Madiboyne revealed that discussions also focused on the neglect of elderly parents by their children. Post discussions, it was resolved that children who fail to attend to their elderly parents will be barred from government scheme benefits.

Warm Reception by All

The Deputy Sarpanch noted that a unanimous proposal was passed to not register the names of those sons in the Gram Panchayat records who neglect their parents under inheritance rights. He claimed that everyone in the Latur district welcomes this proposal.

Additional Proposals Passed

Sindalkar detailed other discussions, including clearing encroachments from main roads and squares, providing cemeteries for the Lingayat community, building community temples, ensuring water supply, freeing roads from encroachments, and curbing illegal liquor trade.

Potential Impact

The Panchayat hopes that passing this proposal will reduce instances of elder abuse, and if children fail to properly care for their parents, the elderly may disinherit them.
