Preparing for Elections in Maharashtra

All political parties have geared up for the upcoming assembly elections in Maharashtra. Reports suggest that the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena, led by Raj Thackeray, might field a candidate against Shiv Sena (UBT) MLA Aaditya Thackeray for the Worli assembly seat. Sandeep Deshpande is a potential candidate for the seat.

On Saturday, Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) President Raj Thackeray met with Chief Minister Eknath Shinde to discuss the issues in Worli. Considering the focus on concerns related to Worli, this meeting holds significant importance.

According to the Chief Minister's Office, following the meeting, Shinde directed officials to prioritize resolving the issues in Worli. MNS leader Deshpande has been actively addressing the problems faced by Worli residents.

Past Election Context

Notably, the MNS did not field any candidate from Worli in the 2019 assembly elections because Aaditya Thackeray, the son of Shiv Sena (UBT) chief and former CM Uddhav Thackeray, was contesting his first election. Aaditya managed to secure a win with a margin of 62,247 votes without any strong opposition.

Increased Activity from BJP and MNS

Despite Shiv Sena (UBT)'s win, the Worli assembly constituency saw a notable decline in vote margins during the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. The MNS views this as a potential opportunity. The ruling coalition's plans for the elections are still unclear. The Shiv Sena, led by Eknath Shinde, and the ruling BJP are organizing events to bolster their presence in the Worli area.

MNS leader Sandeep Deshpande mentioned that in the 2017 municipal corporation elections, MNS garnered approximately 30,000 to 33,000 votes from Worli. The MNS has a dedicated voter base in this constituency. The party also claimed that Aaditya Thackeray, the second-in-command in Shiv Sena (UBT), is not accessible to the common people as his father Uddhav Thackeray is.

Deshpande stated, "The question here is about accessibility. People need a legislator whom they can easily contact. The current MLA is not easily approachable to the residents."
