The End of a Dream: AAP's Defeat in Delhi is More Than a Change of Power!

Politics is the art of the possible... If we put it in simpler terms, it means anything is possible in politics. This principle applies to electoral victories and defeats as well. However, sometimes some results are not just a change of power. They become subjects of historical discourse, which are presented as examples in the future.

Politics: The Art of the Possible...

Understanding this in simple terms means that anything is achievable in politics. This idea is equally applicable to electoral wins and losses. Yet, some outcomes are more than just power transference; they turn into historical narratives, referenced in future discourse. One such loss was faced by the Aam Aadmi Party in the Delhi Assembly election. This defeat transcends a mere state power shift and resembles the demise of a 'dream.' To comprehend why, we need to link the present with chapters from the past.

The Movement, Hope, and Aspirations for Change in Politics...

On November 26, 2012, a date was marked by the emergence of a party claiming change, new hope, simplicity, and integrity — the 'Aam Aadmi' Party. This name resonated with everyone. After Anna's movement, Kejriwal stepping into politics sparked a nationwide hope for an alternative, connecting directly with people by addressing VIP culture, simplicity, corruption, and accountability of leaders to the public. There was so much trust in the party spun out of the Anna movement that many left their jobs, their businesses, and joined in.

With Power Came Changes in Attitude and Appearance

When Kejriwal first contested the elections, his party fell short of a majority. They then formed an alliance with Congress, despite having publicly vowed not to do so. This was their first broken promise. Still, people understood it as a necessity of time and chose to support Kejriwal again. Gradually, Kejriwal's simplicity faded, and companions dwindled. Those who exposed party flaws were eventually ousted.

The simplicity and democratic promises that brought Kejriwal and his party into politics began to crumble within a couple of years. However, by then, Kejriwal had mastered the nuances of politics, resolving every controversy and succeeding. He played the card of free benefits and triumphed.

But the Public Couldn't Endure Corruption Accusations

Undoubtedly, Kejriwal's image was dealt the severest blow when his name surfaced in the liquor scandal. Trapped amidst these allegations, even facing imprisonment, his reputation for honesty and simplicity was almost shattered, with the remaining perception dismantled by the 'Sheesh Mahal' scandal.

An Overabundance of Promises...

After being released from jail, Kejriwal resigned and once again played the 'free benefits' card to bolster his image. He made new promises every day, attempting to appease all social segments. Yet, despite all promises, he couldn't reclaim power.

This defeat is not just about a change in power because...

Kejriwal's defeat isn't merely a shift of power within a state; it's a fall of the dream that his party's alternative politics symbolized. It's a downfall of hopes and a breach of the pledge for untainted politics. The Aam Aadmi Party's journey provides a lesson that, should any future party emerge from a movement, people will cite this example.
