In Bangladesh, prosecutors charged former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina with 'crimes against humanity' on Sunday. These charges relate to her alleged role in the violent actions during the 2024 student movement, which ultimately led to the collapse of the Awami League government, Hasina's resignation, and her departure from the country.
An investigative report concluded that Hasina herself directed government security agencies, her party, and affiliated organizations, leading to numerous deaths.
'Sheikh Hasina Allowed Armed Activists Free Rein'
Bangladesh's Chief Prosecutor of the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT), Mohammad Tajul Islam, stated during Sunday's hearing that these killings were premeditated. He cited video evidence and encrypted communications between various agencies. This information was reported by news agency Bloomberg.
According to Al Jazeera, the Chief Prosecutor noted, 'After a thorough examination of the evidence, we concluded that this was a coordinated, widespread, and well-planned attack. Sheikh Hasina gave security agencies and her party's armed activists free rein to quash the movement.'
'Sheikh Hasina Ultimately Responsible for Security Forces' Actions'
Prosecutors further alleged that as the head of government, Sheikh Hasina bears full responsibility for the actions of security forces during the unrest. These allegations against Hasina were made when the interim government, led by Muhammad Yunus, banned all Awami League activities under anti-terrorism laws just weeks ago amid ongoing protests. This development comes as pressure mounts on the Yunus government with increasing demands for immediate general elections in the country.
