Rohit Sharma on bolstering fast bowlers:

Indian captain Rohit Sharma urges that the Indian cricket team maintains peak fitness levels, especially strengthening the fast-bowling lineup. He envisions a bench full of capable fast bowlers, ready to step into the playing XI at a moment's notice, aiming for a pool of eight or nine such talents.

On October 15, on the eve of the Bangalore Test against New Zealand, Rohit stated: 'We aim to build a robust bench strength. If something happens tomorrow, we should not be overly dependent on a few individuals. We are looking towards the future to ensure we have the right players ready at any time.'

'We seek players who can instantly fill roles if injuries occur. It's not just about having three or four options. Just as we have many batting alternatives, we wish to replicate this depth with our bowlers,' Rohit elaborated.

For the three-match series against New Zealand, India's 15-member squad includes players like Harshit Rana, Mayank Yadav, and Nithish Kumar Reddy as reserves. Mayank and Reddy recently debuted in the T20 series against Bangladesh, while Rana awaits his opportunity.

Discussing reserve players, Rohit mentioned: 'We kept them close because we're considering them for the Australia tour. The Border-Gavaskar Trophy begins on November 22. We want to consistently monitor their workload and develop their potential, even though they haven’t played much red-ball cricket yet.'

Prasidh Krishna was initially included as a traveling reserve for the New Zealand Test but got injured, managing only eight overs in Karnataka’s opening Ranji Trophy match against Madhya Pradesh at Indore.

What Rohit said about Bumrah?

Jasprit Bumrah stands as the linchpin in India's fast-bowling arsenal. Recently appointed as vice-captain for the New Zealand series, Bumrah may step into the captain’s role in the opening Test matches against Australia due to Rohit’s personal commitments.

Rohit remarked on Bumrah: 'He has consistently been part of the leadership group and is among the experienced players. He’s played extensively, alongside me, and has a nuanced understanding of the game.'
