On Tuesday, renowned folk singer Maithili Thakur officially joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). According to party insiders, she might be fielded for the Bihar Assembly elections from the Ali Nagar seat in Darbhanga. This development nearly confirms the replacement of the current MLA, Mishrilal Yadav, from the Ali Nagar seat. The BJP is strategizing to leverage Maithili's vast social media fan base and her popularity in the Mithila region by making her the face of their campaign. If nominated, this would mark the first occasion where a well-known singer tied to the cultural roots of Bihar enters the political arena.

Recently Met with Vinod Tawde

Maithili recently met with BJP's senior leader and organizational secretary, Vinod Tawde, which fueled speculations about her political entry. Speaking to Aaj Tak post the meeting, Maithili expressed a positive experience from the half-hour discussion with BJP leaders. She affirmed her support for NDA, citing that BJP has always been her preference. Maithili mentioned that while her work keeps her in Delhi, her heart remains in Bihar, and she aspires to contribute to its development by serving the people.

On October 5th, BJP’s National General Secretary Vinod Tawde shared a photo with Maithili Thakur on his X (formerly Twitter) handle, highlighting the story of families like hers who left Bihar during the 1995 Lalu Prasad era and their interest in returning, inspired by Bihar’s evolving landscape.

Hailing from Darbhanga, Maithili Thakur is noted for her dedication to folk music and Mithila culture, boasting a massive fan following on social media. This year, Maithili turned 25.

Maithili Thakur hails from Darbhanga, Bihar, and is a celebrated singer renowned for her folk music. She has captivated audiences globally with her concerts. Aged 25, she is famous for her association with Mithila culture. From a young age, Maithili had a passion for singing, later evolving into a playback singer with formal training in classical music. She has performed songs in multiple languages, with her parents, Ramesh and Bharti Thakur, being musicians proficient in the Maithili genre.

Her parents work as music teachers. Maithili has two brothers who are also venturing into music careers. Trained by their grandfather and father, all three siblings have been taught not only Hindustani classical music but also how to play instruments like the harmonium and tabla.
