The CBI is employing every method to unravel the mysteries of the Kolkata rape case. After hours of interrogations with the main accused and the former principal, polygraph tests have now been conducted. Today, polygraph tests were performed on seven people. A special team from CFSL Delhi visited Kolkata for this purpose. Among those tested were the primary accused Sanjay Roy, former principal Sandeep Ghosh, four junior doctors on night duty at the time, and a volunteer.
The polygraph test for the main accused, Sanjay Roy, was conducted in jail, where he is in 14-day judicial custody. The tests for the remaining six individuals were conducted at the CBI office. Sanjay's test was crucial as he is the primary suspect. The aim is to determine the timeline and involvement of others, if any. Former principal Sandeep Ghosh has been under suspicion from the beginning. He continues to face questions, with over 100 hours of interrogation so far.
CBI Registers Case Against Former Principal
Former principal Sandeep Ghosh is under scrutiny because he headed the hospital. His behavior and decisions are questionable. Three key questions persist. When and how did he learn about the incident? Why was there a delay in filing the report? Why was there negligence in preserving evidence? Additionally, a corruption investigation against him has commenced. The CBI has formally registered a case against him today. Following an order from the Calcutta High Court, CBI officers presented a copy of the FIR in Alipore Court.
Directions on Former Deputy Superintendent Akhtar Ali’s Petition
A CBI official noted that this action follows High Court directions, transferring the investigation from the state-formed SIT to the agency. On Saturday, the CBI collected necessary documents from the SIT and began the re-registration process of the FIR. The High Court issued these directives on a petition from Akhtar Ali, former Deputy Superintendent of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, who requested an ED investigation into corruption during Sandeep Ghosh’s tenure.
CBI Determined to Solve Kolkata Incident
The tests on the remaining four junior doctors were essential as they were present at the scene that night. They could reveal significant truths about the case. The victim, a lady doctor, had dinner with these doctors before the incident. Their testimonies could shed light on the events of that night. One volunteer was also tested due to his extensive knowledge of the incident. The CBI is persistently working to uncover the complexities of the Kolkata rape case. But aside from the arrest of the main accused, Sanjay Roy, no concrete breakthrough has been achieved yet. The CBI has employed all methods, including crime scene recreations and continuous interrogations of dozens of people.

What is a Polygraph Test?
Sometimes police use polygraph tests to extract the truth from suspects. This involves a lie detector machine to catch lies. The machine monitors bodily changes during responses to questions, determining if the suspect is truthful. The suspect's physical activities are meticulously read. Post this, the reactions help conclude the truthfulness of the answers.
How Does This Machine Work?
This machine comprises several components. Various units are attached to the suspect’s body, such as fingers, head, and mouth. When the suspect responds, data from these units are relayed to the main machine, which discerns truth from lies. Units like the pneumograph, cardiovascular recorder, and galvanometer are attached to the body. Pulse cuffs are placed on the hands, and Lombroso gloves on the fingers.
Additionally, the machine monitors blood pressure and pulse rate. Devices like the pneumograph supervise pulse rate and respiration. The breathing patterns during answers help indicate truthfulness. A tube is tied around the chest to monitor breathing. The cardiovascular recorder measures heartbeats and blood pressure, noting abnormalities when lying, thus revealing the truth.
How is Truth Detected?
The galvanometer checks the skin's electrical conductivity. The recording device collects this data. Initially, the suspect is asked general questions unrelated to the case to establish a baseline. Most questions are then in yes/no format. Experts analyze the machine data to determine the truth. Pulse rate, blood pressure, breathing, skin changes, and physical sensations provide the basis for these conclusions.

When and How Did This Horrific Incident Occur?
This terrifying incident happened on the night of August 8-9, when a trainee doctor's body was found at RG Kar Medical College, Kolkata. The doctor, aged 31, was on night duty with three other doctors that day. Two doctors were from the chest medicine department, and one was a trainee. A staff member from the hospital’s house staff was also present. That night, these doctors and staff had dinner together.
Later, around 2 AM, the female doctor went to the seminar hall to sleep. Sanjay Roy then entered the hall through the back door, brutally killing the doctor before raping her. Shockingly, the accused was neither hospital staff nor a patient’s relative; he worked as a civic volunteer for Kolkata Police.
When police admitted someone to this hospital, he was present to fetch medicines and assist. However, on the incident day, he came to the hospital’s back area to drink alcohol. While intoxicated, he watched obscene videos on his phone before committing the crime.
At around 4:45 AM, he was seen leaving the seminar hall. Post-crime, he attempted to tamper with evidence. Police found that he tried to clean bloodstains at the crime scene. After reaching home, he washed his clothes. He faces charges under BNS sections 64 (rape) and 103 (murder).
