Junior doctors at Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College and Hospital are persistently demanding justice in the brutal rape and murder case of a lady doctor. The aggrieved doctors are demanding the removal of Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal, Director of Medical Education (DME), Director of Health Services (DHS), and the Health Secretary from their positions. Additionally, they have accused authorities of tampering with evidence post the incident.
One doctor stated, "We condemn such heinous crimes. This crime is a result of the collusion between the West Bengal government and health department officials. Evidence tampering followed this incident. We demand that the concerned authorities, the CBI, and the Supreme Court expedite the investigation process and ensure that the culprits face swift justice." They also called for proper security measures in all hospitals.
From the onset of this horrifying incident, continuous mistakes by the Kolkata police and hospital administration have posed significant problems for West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. Based on these mistakes and allegations, the CBI has arrested ex-principal Sandeep Ghosh and Tala Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Abhijit Mandal, who are currently being interrogated by the CBI.
Let's uncover the ten major mistakes that have led to trouble for Mamata Banerjee...
1.
Attempting to Cover Up Rape and Murder as Suicide
Ex-principal Sandeep Ghosh of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital received information about the rape and murder of the lady doctor on the morning of August 9 at 9:58 AM but did not immediately inform the police. Instead, he lodged a vague complaint through the medical superintendent much later in the day, even though the victim was declared dead by 12:44 PM. Ghosh also attempted to pass off the case as a suicide.
2. Delayed Arrival of OC at the Crime Scene
Sandeep Ghosh called OC Abhijit Mandal of Tala Police Station at 10:03 AM on August 9 and later contacted a lawyer at 1:40 PM. However, the case for unnatural death was only registered at 11:30 PM. OC Mandal became aware of the incident at 10:03 AM but did not reach the crime scene immediately. He was seen at the crime scene around an hour later at 11 AM.
3. Conspiracy to Hide the Truth About the Victim's Death
The first GD entry number 542 mentions that a PG trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College was found unconscious in the seminar hall of the chest medicine department. However, a doctor's examination had already confirmed the victim's death. Based on the condition of the victim's body, it was obvious that she had been raped and killed. Despite this, there was an evident conspiracy to conceal the truth.
4. Delay in Confiscating the Accused's Clothes and Items
Despite being aware of the severity of the crime, OC Abhijit Mandal did not register the case under the relevant and necessary sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). The clothing and belongings of the key accused, Sanjay Roy, necessary for forensic examination, were confiscated after an unnecessary delay of two days.
5. Failure to Preserve the Crime Scene
A significant lapse occurred in preserving the crime scene. A large number of people were present at the scene before and after the arrival of Kolkata police. The police failed to adequately secure and preserve the crime scene, even neglecting to cordon off the area. Videos and photos showing unauthorized people at the crime scene, with police presence, went viral days after the incident.
6. Delays in Post-Mortem and Issuance of Death Certificate
The hospital administration initially informed the victim's family of her suicide. Even after the family reached the scene, they were not allowed to see her. The post-mortem was delayed, and hasty permission was given for cremation. The victim's family had requested a second post-mortem under camera surveillance. Even the death certificate was issued after a significant delay.
7. Mamata Banerjee's Compensation Announcement Backfired
When the rape and murder case gained traction, Mamata Banerjee visited the victim's home to meet with her family and offered compensation. She announced compensation of ten lakh rupees. The victim's father said, "The day the Chief Minister came to our house, she offered us compensation." However, Mamata Banerjee later denied making such an offer.
8. Police Failed to Prevent Assault on Doctors by Mob
On the night of August 14, junior doctors were protesting at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. Suddenly, a large mob gathered at the scene, with many disguised as protesters. Many intruded into the hospital premises, causing widespread vandalism. Doctors were assaulted, and stones were pelted at police personnel. The mob even damaged the crime scene.
9. Main Accused Sanjay Roy Used Police's Bike
The main accused, Sanjay Roy, was using a bike registered in the name of the Police Commissioner on the night of the incident. According to the CBI's investigation, the bike was registered in May 2024. Sanjay traveled 15 kilometers under the influence of alcohol on August 9 using this bike. Kolkata police later clarified that all official government vehicles are initially registered under the Police Commissioner.
10. Action and Arrest of Social Media Critics
The Kolkata police initially handled the case investigation. However, after facing criticism from media and social media, the police acted against influential social media users, YouTubers, students, and doctors. About 280 notices were issued, and a 23-year-old student was arrested in connection with the protests.
