Five years ago, at the end of 2019, videos surfaced from hospitals in Wuhan, China, showing people struggling with breathing issues and severe coughs. This mysterious health crisis soon escalated globally, later named COVID-19, affecting the entire world.

Today, there is a lingering question—are we seeing a repeat in China? Videos depicting hospital chaos are circulating widely on social media. Claims state that the outbreak of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) and other viruses has congested hospitals and impacted cemeteries as well. Influenza A, Mycoplasma Pneumonia, and COVID-19 are included among these viruses.

Panic Spreads on Social Media

Amid worries of a new pandemic post-COVID-19, social media users are growing anxious. A viral post, viewed over 12 million times, features overcrowded hospital hallways filled with elderly patients. It alleges that Chinese hospitals are struggling under the surge of 'Influenza A' and 'Human Metapneumovirus,' echoing the scenes from COVID's peak three years ago.

Statements from WHO and Chinese Health Authorities

Despite these alarming claims, no official confirmations have been made. Neither the World Health Organization (WHO) nor Chinese health officials have verified a new pandemic or issued an emergency alert. Experts maintain that, notwithstanding the viral social media posts, this situation currently remains speculative.

Understanding Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV)

HMPV generally causes cold-like symptoms and primarily affects young children, the elderly, and individuals with weakened immune systems. Symptoms include coughing, fever, and nasal congestion, but HMPV can also lead to severe respiratory illnesses such as pneumonia and bronchiolitis.

Spread Similar to COVID-19

The spread of HMPV mirrors that of COVID-19. It transmits through droplets when an infected individual coughs or sneezes. Moreover, touching surfaces contaminated with the virus poses a transmission risk. Despite the fear incited by these viral videos and claims, experts advise against undue alarm. WHO and health departments have not verified a new pandemic.
