In Manipur, beginning at 11:45 PM on Saturday, internet and mobile data services have been suspended for five days across five districts: Imphal West, Imphal East, Thoubal, Bishnupur, and Kakching. This measure responds to the tense conditions following the arrest of a leader from the Meitei community, Arambai Tenggol.
The authorities fear that some unsocial elements could utilize social media to spread incendiary messages, images, and videos, potentially disrupting peace and further deteriorating law and order.
The order from Home Department Secretary N. Ashok Kumar specifies that the decision was taken in an emergency to forestall any rumors or instigation. It also underscores that anyone flouting this directive will face stringent legal consequences.
Indeed, late Saturday night, large-scale demonstrations erupted in the districts of Imphal East and West following Arambai Tenggol's arrest. In response, the administration decided to suspend internet services to control the situation and curb rumors. Additionally, the authorities have appealed to the public to maintain peace and not be swayed by misleading information.
According to PTI News Agency, certain areas in Manipur's capital, Imphal, witnessed protests ignited by news of Arambai Tenggol's arrest on Saturday night. Reports indicate that in Kwakeithel and Uripok, people took to burning tires and old furniture on roads, demanding the leader’s release. To manage the situation, the administration has deployed additional security forces. However, the administration has yet to clarify the identity of the arrested individual and the charges against them.
