The situation in Syria is rapidly declining. Bloody violence between security forces and supporters of the ousted President Bashar al-Assad has claimed over a thousand lives in just two days. This is reported as the largest violence within Syria in the last 14 years. According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, based in Britain, among the dead are 745 civilians who were shot at close range. Additionally, 125 members of government security forces and 148 militants linked to Assad's armed groups have been killed. Reports indicate that power and drinking water have been cut off in large areas around the city of Latakia.
What the New Syrian Government Says
The government stated that they are taking action against attacks carried out by Assad's supporters. They blamed the large-scale violence on the actions carried out by different individuals. Recent clashes in Syria began when security forces attempted to apprehend a wanted person near the coastal city of Jableh on Thursday, during which loyalists of Assad ambushed them.
Sunni Muslim gunmen loyal to the new Syrian government began attacking members of Assad's minority Alawite community on Friday, leading to ongoing clashes between the two. However, this is a significant setback for Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, a faction that led rebel groups to overthrow Assad's regime.
