In Delhi-NCR, a series of stringent restrictions have been imposed due to rising air pollution. These restrictions are hitting daily wage workers involved in construction activities the hardest, leaving their lives in a state of pause. These workers rely on daily earnings for their livelihood, and now they worry that their children might go hungry. In fact, after the Air Quality Index soared above 450, the GRAP-IV (Graded Response Action Plan) was enforced in Delhi.

If we stay at home, what will we eat?

Suman, a mother of two, voices her concerns: "If we stay at home, what will we eat? What will we feed our children?" She recently renewed her worker card with hopes of receiving government aid, but her efforts proved futile. She emphasizes that their livelihood is solely dependent on daily work, and without it, they have nothing.

Air quality in Delhi is critically severe

Recently, air pollution has surged rapidly in Delhi-NCR. A dense smog enveloped the national capital on Tuesday as well, with AQI recorded as high as 488. Construction and demolition activities are halted, trucks are banned from entry, and schools are closed. Offices have also been instructed to adjust for their employees.

"If there’s no work, how will the family survive?"

Babu Ram, a 63-year-old construction worker, explained that he is deep in debt. He expressed concern saying, "For people like us, there's no pension. Government schemes are marred by corruption, intermediaries take everything, and nothing reaches us. If I can’t work, how will my family manage?"

Rajesh Kumar, a 42-year-old laborer, mentioned that his family back in Bihar relies on the money he sends. "I haven’t married yet due to many responsibilities, including my sister’s wedding, for which I am repaying a loan of ₹6 lakh."
