Renowned Bangladeshi cricket all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan’s troubles appear unending as a Dhaka court issues an arrest warrant against him. Since the government upheaval by Sheikh Hasina, Awami League's former parliamentarian Shakib has been residing abroad. The warrant involves Shakib along with three others. Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate of Dhaka, Ziadur Rahman, issued this order on Sunday (January 19).
What is this latest case involving Shakib?
On December 15, Shakib Al Hasan's name emerged in a bounced check case. Subsequently, on December 18, the court ordered him to present himself on January 19, following a preliminary hearing. Initiating the case was IFIC Bank's Relationship Officer Shahibur Rahman, charging Shakib and three others for failing to transfer 41.4 million Bangladeshi Taka (2.95 crore INR) via two separate checks.
Besides Shakib Al Hasan, the accused include his company Al Hasan Agro Farm Limited’s Managing Director Gazi Shaghir Hussain, Director Imdadul Haque, and Malaika Begum. Shakib’s company often borrowed funds from IFIC Bank’s Banani branch. Statements reveal the checks were issued to repay part of the loan, but they bounced due to insufficient funds.
Murder Charges Also Haunt Shakib
Shakib Al Hasan is also implicated in a student murder case, although this veteran Bangladeshi player was participating in a T20 league in Canada at the time. Other accused in this case include former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, Obaidul Quader, and 154 others, along with approximately 400-500 unidentified individuals. On August 5 of the previous year, Rubel reportedly participated in a protest march on Ring Road, Adabor. Allegations suggest that during the rally, an orchestrated criminal plot led to shots fired into the crowd, resulting in Rubel’s death.

The BCB (Bangladesh Cricket Board) has unequivocally communicated to Shakib Al Hasan that the board cannot guarantee his safety. As a result, Shakib has been unable to return to Bangladesh for several months. Last year, he wished to play a farewell Test match on his home ground against South Africa but security concerns and fears of arrest prevented his return. With his family now settled in the United States, it's unlikely Shakib will return to Bangladesh soon.
37-year-old Shakib Al Hasan made remarkable contributions in cricket, playing 71 Tests for Bangladesh and scoring 4609 runs at an average of 37.78 while taking 246 wickets.
