As the debate over 'One Nation, One Election' intensifies, the announcement for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections could happen today. Speculations suggest that assembly elections in five states may coincide with the general elections, an enigma expected to be unraveled at 3 PM.
The terms of the state legislatures in Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, Arunachal Pradesh, and Sikkim end in June, with the Lok Sabha elections planned from April to May. It's highly probable that these states will undergo assembly elections simultaneously with the national polls.
Election Mandate for Jammu and Kashmir by September!
Last year, the Supreme Court mandated elections in Jammu and Kashmir by September 2024. No official statement has been released by the Central Government regarding elections in April-May, however. Following the revocation of Article 370, Jammu and Kashmir was bifurcated into two Union Territories – Jammu and Kashmir, and Ladakh.
If elections are held in conjunction with the Lok Sabha here, it would be the first since the annulment of Article 370. Post-delimitation, the legislative assembly's seats have increased from 83 to 90, with seven reserved for Scheduled Castes and nine for Scheduled Tribes.
