Weather Today: Harsh Heatwave in Delhi-UP, Monsoon Mayhem in Maharashtra-Karnataka

The monsoon is advancing at pace, but several states of North India are still grappling with extreme heat. The Meteorological Department has issued a heatwave alert in Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Jammu, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, Bihar, and Jharkhand until June 13. Meanwhile, heavy rainfall warnings have been issued for Maharashtra, Karnataka, Kerala, Arunachal Pradesh, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Assam, and Meghalaya.

Delhi Weather Update

The heatwave has once again resumed in Delhi. The meteorological department has issued a heatwave warning for the capital until June 16, during which the daytime temperatures could soar up to 45 degrees Celsius.

For the entire week, Delhi's maximum temperature may hover around 44 to 45 degrees Celsius, with a minimum temperature range between 30 to 31 degrees Celsius.

National Weather Update

According to the weather forecasting agency Skymet, within the next 24 hours, moderate to heavy rainfall is expected in South Konkan Goa, South Central Maharashtra, Marathwada, Telangana, Andaman and Nicobar Islands, and Coastal Karnataka. Northern interior Karnataka, Kerala, and Lakshadweep may experience light to moderate rain with chances of heavy showers in some places.

Light to moderate rain is likely in parts of Northeast India, Sikkim, Southwest Madhya Pradesh and Vidarbha, and Andhra Pradesh. South Odisha, Tamil Nadu, Southern Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, and South-eastern Rajasthan could also witness light showers. Heatwave conditions might prevail in parts of Madhya Pradesh, Jharkhand, Bihar, Gangetic West Bengal, Odisha, Punjab, and Haryana. Severe heatwave conditions are possible in some areas of Eastern Uttar Pradesh.

Monsoon and Weather Patterns Across India

As per Skymet, the northern limit of the monsoon passes through 16.5N/60E, 16.5N/65E, 16 degrees N/70 degrees E. passing Goa (Mormugao), Narayanpet, Narasapur, 17E/85N, 19.5E/88N, 21.5E/90N, 23E/89.5N and Islampur. Western disturbances as troughs in mid-tropospheric westerlies, stretching at a height of nearly 5.8 kilometers above mean sea level, are now running north of latitude 28°N at 70 degrees east.
