The final meeting of the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) on the Waqf Amendment Bill was held on Thursday. During this session, the chairperson asked all members to provide their suggestions to conclude discussions.

However, in today’s session, opposition party MPs requested an extension for the JPC. They are now set to meet the Lok Sabha Speaker on Monday to discuss their demand.

'Detailed Discussions and Deliberations with All'

In the meantime, the ruling party MPs denied any need for extending the committee's tenure. Chairman Jagdambika Pal expressed confidence in completing the report on time. The ruling faction believes the Waqf Bill Committee has conducted comprehensive discussions and deliberations with all stakeholders.

'Free to Meet the Speaker'

JPC Chairman Jagdambika Pal stated, 'Our report is ready, and we will discuss it clause by clause. The opposition was also pushing to extend the JPC’s term. Any member or opposition is free to meet the Speaker. They (opposition) are attempting to extend the JPC's term.'

Unchecked Powers to be Reduced

In fact, the Cabinet meeting approved proposals for 40 amendments in the Waqf Act. Once the amendment bill is passed in Parliament, the unchecked powers of the Waqf Board will be curtailed. It’s noteworthy that the board won't be able to declare any property ownership without verification.

Powerful People Controlling Waqf

It should be noted that in 2013, during the UPA government, the powers of the Waqf Board were enhanced. Common Muslims, poor Muslim women, children of divorced Muslim women, and communities like Shia and Bohra have long called for changes in the law. They argue that the Waqf lacks space for ordinary Muslims and is dominated by powerful individuals. The revenue is questionable. There is no assessment of how much revenue is generated.
