The ceaseless wave of violence in Manipur refuses to subside, with ongoing strife between the Kuki and Meitei communities. Reports reveal a recent shootout between two armed factions. The latest crossfire took place at the tri-junction of Kangpokpi, Ukhrul, and Imphal East districts, leading to the tragic demise of two individuals from the Kuki community.
The police have identified the deceased as Kamminlal Lufeng (23), son of Paiolet Lufeng from Nongdam, under the jurisdiction of Mafaodam police station in Kangpokpi district, and Kamlenmang Lunkim (22), son of Thangkhomang Lunkim from Bongjang village, also in Kangpokpi district.
In the aftermath of a two-day crossfire between Thoubal and Tengnoupal, violence has erupted once again in Moirangpurel, Imphal East, involving armed miscreants from both Kangpokpi and Imphal East.
According to police reports, tension remains high in areas comprising the tri-junction of Kangpokpi, Ukhrul, and Imphal East districts. It's crucial to note that Manipur is scheduled for polling on April 19th, as part of the first phase of elections.
Earlier in February, a shootout between two communities in Imphal East led to the death of a 25-year-old village volunteer. The incident also resulted in injuries to two individuals. Senior police officials disclosed that the shooting occurred near the border of Kangpokpi district, within the Pukhao Shantipur area. The deceased was identified as Sagolsam Loya, who was pronounced dead upon arrival at a private hospital in Imphal.
Since the communal violence that erupted following the 'Tribal Unity March' against the Scheduled Tribe (ST) status demand by the Meitei community on May 3rd last year, over 180 people have lost their lives in Manipur. The Meitei community makes up about 53% of Manipur's population, primarily residing in the Imphal Valley, while the tribal communities, including Naga and Kuki, comprise 40% and mostly inhabit the hilly districts.
