Actor Vijay's party, Tamizha Veetri Kazhagam (TVK), announced on Sunday that they will approach the Madras High Court's Madurai Bench to seek an independent inquiry into the stampede at the Karur rally. The mishap led to the tragic death of 40 individuals, including 10 children. The party has alleged that this incident was not accidental, but a result of a deliberate plot. They also pointed to stone-throwing in the crowd and a baton charge by the police at the event location.
According to sources, Justice N. Senthilkumar of the Madras High Court is scheduled to hear an urgent petition at 4:30 PM today. The petition demands the prevention of any public gatherings by actor Vijay's party, Tamizha Veetri Kazhagam (TVK), until the inquiry into the Karur stampede is concluded.
Eyewitnesses reported that chaos erupted as the power went out just before Vijay's arrival, coupled with narrow streets and a sudden influx of people. The stampede led to families being separated, with women and children struggling to breathe. Some post-mortem reports listed asphyxia as the cause of death. The next morning, scattered shoes, torn clothes, broken sticks, and crushed bottles at the scene highlighted the magnitude of the chaos.
On Sunday, Vijay expressed his deep sorrow to his supporters, stating that his heart is broken. He announced compensation of 2 million INR for the families of the deceased and 200,000 INR for those injured. Wishing a speedy recovery to the injured, he stated that this loss is irreparable. As a member of your family, I stand with you in this sorrow, he conveyed.
Meanwhile, Tamil Nadu's Chief Minister, M. K. Stalin, visited Karur and met with the injured at the hospital. He assured the victim's families of robust government support and promised to provide all possible medical facilities.
