Business thrived during SP and BSP governments
The illegal mining business flourished during the SP and BSP governments, turning over millions, with Haji Iqbal, also known as Bala, being a prominent figure. Now, the BJP government in Uttar Pradesh is taking action against him, seizing assets acquired through illegal mining. The Saharanpur police seized assets worth 107 crores from Haji Iqbal’s close associates under the Gangster Act.
28 Cases Registered Across Various Stations
Discussing the cases against Haji Iqbal and his gang, Mohammed Iqbal, aka Haji Iqbal, aka Bala, faces 28 charges in different Saharanpur stations. His sons Abdul Wahid, aka Wajid, and Javed face 12 cases from Lucknow to Saharanpur, while the third son Afzal has 3, and the fourth son Aalishan faces 7 charges.
The total of 123 properties registered under Mohammed Iqbal and his gang are valued at 364,013,130 rupees (approximately 36 crore and 40 lakhs). However, as all these properties are located alongside highways and comprise valuable orchards, their market price is estimated at nearly 1,069,304,180 rupees (about 106 crores and 93 lakhs).
Past Governments Reluctant to Take Action
In Uttar Pradesh, Haji Iqbal has been a notorious name in the mining mafia, with even the government hesitant to take action against him. During the BSP government, Haji Iqbal played a crucial role from mining deals to acquiring sugar mills, amassing wealth in billions. The Saharanpur police have now taken action against these assets.
