Amidst controversies of NEET and NET paper leaks, UPSC has made comprehensive preparations to prevent cheating in the Mains Exam. UPSC has decided to adopt advanced technology to ensure the integrity of its examinations. Artificial Intelligence will now be used to prevent students from cheating in the Mains Exam.

Tender Invited for Applications

The UPSC Mains examination is scheduled to be held on September 20. AI-based CCTV cameras will be installed in the examination halls. UPSC has invited applications from public sector undertakings through a tender to develop such technology. The tender mentions the need for Aadhaar-based fingerprint identification, facial recognition for candidates, QR code scanning on admit cards, and AI-based CCTV surveillance. UPSC will provide the data of candidates for this purpose.

According to a document released on June 3, 2024, "UPSC places great importance on conducting its examinations in a free and fair manner. In its efforts to achieve these objectives, the commission will use digital technology to match and cross-check the biometric details of candidates and monitor various activities during the examination to prevent fraud and unfair means."

Live Monitoring During the Examination

The document also clarifies that two photos of students will be captured for facial recognition: one during online registration, provided by UPSC, and the second taken while writing the exam in the exam hall. Additionally, real-time monitoring of students will be conducted. The duration students spend in the exam hall will be closely monitored. This entire monitoring process will be live on-screen, viewable by officials at various centers.

AI Cameras to Detect Cheating Instantly During the Exam

The document further states that the company awarded the tender must install at least one color CCTV camera for approximately 24 students per examination hall, one CCTV at the entry gate, one CCTV at the exit gate, and one CCTV control room. If the system detects any irregularities, they will be immediately identified. This requires arrangements for zero blind spots, furniture, offline cameras, etc.
