Smugglers beware! Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand authorities have tightened security at airports. A pivotal decision has been taken by both state's customs departments: anyone caught smuggling gold from foreign lands will have their passports seized. This measure has been introduced as a stern lesson to curb the illegal trade in precious metals.
The customs department is sending a clear message with this action plan, based on passport regulations. In an impactful start, UP and Uttarakhand have initiated a strategy that aims to make smuggling activities an exceedingly risky endeavor. To enforce this, a list of 107 individuals has already been sent to the regional passport office.
It's worth noting that there has been a rise in gold smuggling cases in these states. Recently, the customs department at the Chaudhary Charan Singh International Airport in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, recovered 3 kilograms of gold. The gold, valued at nearly 1.5 crore INR, was seized from four individuals arriving from Dubai.
Earlier, the same airport's customs detained an individual attempting to smuggle gold inside a juicer. The accused, who arrived from Dubai on flight FZ 8325, was found with 581 grams of gold, valued at approximately 29.02 lakhs INR.
