In an intriguing episode from Basti, Uttar Pradesh, a clandestine operation to smuggle gold via train has been unearthed. The smuggler opted for train transport to blend into the crowd and evade detection, hoping to complete the mission smoothly. However, thanks to sharp intelligence, the smuggler was intercepted by the police, leading to the discovery of not just a few but gold worth an astonishing 12.5 million Rupees.
Reports indicate that the Government Railway Police (GRP) received a tip-off about smuggling activities. Subsequently, the GRP team scrutinized the Lokmanya Tilak Terminus (LTT) Express and apprehended a suspect. Upon interrogation, the smuggler could not produce any valid papers for the gold.
Further inquiries revealed that the smuggler intended to transport the gold to Gorakhpur. A Lucknow-based individual had tasked him to deliver the gold to Gorakhpur. However, he was caught at Basti railway station.
The GRP reported the arrest of Laloo Mahesh, a 30-year-old resident from Paschim Medinipur district, West Bengal. Upon searching, 1,573.63 grams of gold jewelry were recovered in seven different packets. The suspect admitted receiving the gold from Juyeb Khan, a resident of Sarai Mali Khan Chowk, Lucknow.
Juyeb had instructed Laloo to deliver the goods to Gorakhpur and was to receive further instructions via phone on the final recipient. Currently, the seized gold is under the scrutiny of the Income Tax and State Tax departments. This operation was conducted by a joint team from GRP Basti and other police personnel. Legal proceedings have led to the culprit being sent to jail.
