Israeli Strike on UN Peacekeepers in Lebanon: 900 Indian Troops Included

The UN peacekeeping force in Lebanon, known as UNIFIL, is continuously under attack. Meanwhile, a social media campaign claims that the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) supports Hezbollah militants. This force includes 900 troops from the Indian Army.

This online campaign disseminates misinformation and baseless allegations. Two Israeli X accounts are running it. They accuse UNIFIL of claiming that the Israeli Army, under Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's orders, is firing upon their premises. However, Netanyahu asked UNIFIL to withdraw from southern Lebanon some time ago to streamline Israeli military operations in the area.

Recently, a photo emerged of a UN armored vehicle with a Hezbollah flag, which quickly went viral on X. This fueled further claims that UN peacekeepers support Hezbollah terrorists, operating under their flag.

, a journalist from Channel Kan 11 on April 1, 2024, tells a different story. It shows that people attacked a UNIFIL vehicle in the village of Barashit in southern Lebanon, slashing its tires. The Lebanese army had to intervene to rescue the UN peacekeepers. A similar scene was shared by Alma Research and Education Center on their X account.

Subsequently, pro-Israeli accounts on Twitter began trending with UNIFIL Has Failed. They demanded that the UN peacekeeping force leave Lebanon, allowing Israeli forces to carry out their operations. On various X accounts, Hezbollah flag UNIFIL and UNIFIL has failed were trending simultaneously. According to social media listening tool Talkwalker, the message was heavily pushed.

Assaults on UNIFIL...

According to the 2006 UN Security Council Resolution 1701, UNIFIL is responsible for maintaining peace along the Blue Line, the boundary demarcation between Israel and Lebanon. It comprises troops from multiple countries. However, from October 9 to 13, at least eight attacks were carried out on this force.

Three attacks resulted in five injured peacekeepers, with one on October 10 attributed to Israeli forces, injuring two peacekeepers.

Israeli Merkava tanks destroyed a UN position in Ramyah on October 13. Following this, 15 peacekeepers fell ill after toxic gases were released within 100 meters of the UNIFIL station. Israel stated that they located Hezbollah positions 300 meters away from UNIFIL's post, releasing video footage to support their claim.
