In the city of Pune, Maharashtra, a 46-year-old doctor and her daughter have been found infected with the Zika virus. This has caused a stir in the health department. However, officials say the doctor and her daughter are stable.
Recently, the doctor developed a fever and skin rashes. She was then admitted to a private hospital, where her blood sample was sent to the National Institute of Virology (NIV) for testing.
According to the agency, a health officer from Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) reported that when the doctor's blood reports arrived on June 21, it confirmed the Zika virus infection. The doctor is a resident of the Erandwane area. After her tests came back positive, blood samples from five family members were sent for analysis, revealing her 15-year-old daughter also contracted the virus.
Zika virus spreads through the bites of infected Aedes mosquitoes, also known for transmitting infections like dengue and chikungunya. The virus was first identified in Uganda in 1947. Following the report of two cases of Zika in the city, PMC's health department has started surveillance.
No other suspected cases have been found in the area, but authorities have begun preventive measures like fogging and fumigation to control mosquitoes.
The state health department has started to raise public awareness. Instructions have been issued to monitor the health of pregnant women in the area. While Zika virus does not usually pose a serious threat, it can cause microcephaly in the fetus if a pregnant woman becomes infected.
Recognizing the Zika Virus:
Zika virus symptoms are quite common and include skin rashes, fever, muscle and joint pain, and headaches. Most people infected with Zika do not exhibit symptoms.
How can we prevent Zika virus infection?
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), there is no vaccine or specific treatment for Zika. Experts agree that getting plenty of rest and staying hydrated by drinking water are essential when infected. Awareness about symptoms and treatments is also key.
Since Zika is spread by mosquitoes, it is crucial to avoid mosquito bites as a preventive measure. Applying mosquito repellent can be very helpful. The greatest risk of Zika is to pregnant women, as the virus can spread to the fetus causing brain defects. Pregnant women should therefore take special precautions.
