During the ongoing anti-government protests in Iran, US President Donald Trump has openly voiced his support for the demonstrators. On Tuesday, Trump took to Truth Social, appealing to the people of Iran to continue their protests. He wrote, "Iranian patriots, keep protesting and seize control of your institutions. Help is on the way." However, Trump did not specify the nature of this assistance.
Trump also stated, "Keep track of the names of the killers and oppressors. They will pay a heavy price. I've canceled all meetings with Iranian officials until the unjust killings of protesters cease. Help is on the way." Furthermore, he reiterated the slogan "MIGA" or "Make Iran Great Again."
This statement from Trump comes as Iran, led by its religious government, is ramping up efforts to tackle one of the largest public movements in recent years.
Iran's unrest has erupted due to a severe economic crisis, inflation, and unemployment, posing the largest internal challenge to Iranian authority in at least three years. The situation has worsened amidst heightened international pressure following last year’s military strikes by Israel and the US.
On Tuesday, an Iranian official for the first time acknowledged that about 2,000 people have died since protests began over two weeks ago. In a conversation with Reuters, the official stated that "terrorist elements" are responsible for the deaths among both protesters and security forces, though he did not clarify the numbers among civilians and security personnel.
On Monday, Trump escalated tensions further by announcing a 25% import tariff on goods from any country trading with Iran. He also hinted at considering military action and other options against Iran.
While Iran has yet to officially respond to the tariffs, China has criticized the decision. Iran already grapples with US sanctions and exports the majority of its oil to China. Other key trade partners include Turkey, Iraq, the United Arab Emirates, and India.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi stated that contact with US Special Envoy Steve Whitkoff remains, and Washington’s proposals are under consideration. Meanwhile, the Iranian government consistently accuses the US and Israel of inciting unrest.
