From the outset of his first term, Donald Trump had set his sights on winning the Nobel Peace Prize. Throughout his term, he consistently asserted his eligibility. Trump claimed to have halted seven conflicts and suggested the eighth, between Israel and Hamas, might soon see resolution. Although he framed these not merely as personal or organizational disputes but as full-blown national conflicts, 2025 came and the Nobel was awarded to Venezuelan activist Maria Corina Machado for her peaceful struggle for democracy and human rights in Venezuela. Does this mean Trump's opportunity for a Peace Prize has forever slipped away, or does a glimmer of hope persist?

Venezuela's opposition leader Maria Corina Machado won the Nobel Peace Prize for her commitment to democracy and human rights in Venezuela. Leading democratic movements against dictatorial regimes, Machado has long been a passionate advocate for her nation. The announcement left Trump's dream of a Nobel unfulfilled.

Upon assuming his presidency, Trump immediately embarked on a mission to secure the Nobel. With numerous conflicts raging, he communicated with world leaders and claimed substantial achievements—alleging he had stopped seven wars with the eighth, namely the Israel-Hamas conflict, nearing resolution. His claims found support among several foreign leaders who endorsed his nomination.

Since 2018, Trump has been nominated on several occasions for the Nobel Peace Prize, backed by both American representatives and international leaders. Most recently, US Congresswoman Claudia Tenney advocated for Trump's role in the 2020 Abraham Accords, where Israel and multiple Arab nations resolved tensions and moved toward diplomacy.

This year, nominations from Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu and the Pakistani government were submitted for Trump, though late submissions beyond the Nobel deadline led to their disregard.

Crucial Elements of Peace Treaties

- Endeavors to end wars and establish peace- Movement toward arms reduction- Strengthening international cooperation

Trump's policies conflicted with these tenets. The Norwegian Nobel Committee focuses on initiatives that visibly foster peace or take significant steps in that direction. While threats of trade might pause a conflict, they do not ensure lasting peace.

Delayed Gaza Deal

The Israel-Hamas agreement, though reached, came late. According to Norwegian media, the Nobel Committee had settled on this year's prize by Monday, resulting in the Gaza context losing relevance. Even if finalized, the brokers might not have influenced the already-decided committee verdict.

Seen as Non-Sustainable Efforts

Reuters reports, through Firstpost, that the committee tends to prioritize initiatives with long-term impact and involving multiple countries. Trump's peace attempts appear as rapidly executed diplomatic maneuvers, potentially fragile.

Withdrawing from Major Agreements

This might also contribute. During his first term, Trump withdrew from the Paris Agreement and even distanced from the World Health Organization, despite substantial American funding. Consistently, he threatened trade conflicts with allied nations.

Yet hope remains. If Trump's diplomatic endeavors prove durable and foster regional stability, his chances in future Nobel nominations might improve. Moreover, as per the rules, one can be nominated multiple times, urging Trump toward continued efforts.
