In a bilateral meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump, several critical issues were discussed fruitfully. This was echoed by American experts in a conversation with India Today. Former US administration members Ashley J. Tellis and Lisa Curtis highlighted that wide-ranging agreements from defense to trade clearly marked a strong commencement of US-India relations in Trump's second term.

Insights from American Experts

US foreign policy and defense expert Tellis stated that Prime Minister Modi’s visit, during Trump's first month in office, was principally aimed at convincing the President that India is a superb partner for the US, which Modi achieved successfully.

Tellis added that the Prime Minister wanted to ensure that Trump's trade policies would afford India some relief. This was a ‘Modi Makes Magic’ visit, as persuading a personality like Trump isn't trivial. From observing their press conference interaction, it was evident that the Prime Minister achieved his intended goals.

Despite Trump announcing reciprocal tariffs just before meeting Modi and placing India at the top of the pack, both leaders discussed defense agreements and set a bilateral trade target of $500 billion by 2030.

The deals included increased sales of military equipment to India and Trump's offer of F-35 fighter jets to India. Additionally, India agreed to import American oil and gas, aiming to lower the trade deficit.

Lisa Curtis of the Trump administration remarked that this meeting set the agenda for the US-India partnership for the next four years. “It was a successful meeting. Its occurrence in Trump’s first month underscores how significant India is to the US.”

Reciprocal Tariff Perspective

Experts stated that Trump’s announcement of reciprocal tariffs before meeting Modi shouldn’t be seen as embarrassing, highlighting Trump's distinct operational style. Tellis noted that while Trump would maintain his tariff policy, he is open to agreements with countries based on their alignment with US interests. He also pointed out that both Modi and Trump share a leadership style prioritizing nation and citizen benefits.

F-35 Jet Sale

Another crucial takeaway from the meeting was Trump’s offer of F-35 fighter jets, renowned for their speed and stealth. Tellis noted this as a symbol conveying America’s readiness to provide India with top-notch defense technology. However, India might remain cautious regarding the deal, considering prolonged delays in the delivery of GE F404 engines for the Tejas jets.
