This move is a direct response to President Donald Trump's imposition of a 25% tariff on imports from Canada and Mexico. Trump had already announced comprehensive tariffs on US exports starting Tuesday. Trudeau labeled this action as 'unjust' and vowed that Canada will provide a necessary response.

Justin Trudeau stated, “In the first phase, a 25% tariff is imposed on approximately 30 billion Canadian dollars (US 20.6 billion) worth of American goods. This decision takes effect according to American time at 12:01 AM.”

The trade tensions intensified when Trudeau confirmed that another round of 25% tariffs is scheduled within three weeks, targeting 125 billion Canadian dollars’ worth of American goods. The second phase aims at crucial industries, including automobiles, steel, and aluminum.
Justin Trudeau declared, “Our tariffs will remain in place until the US revokes its trade decisions.” He further added, “If US tariffs persist, we are actively discussing non-tariff measures with provinces and territories.”
