In today's world, travel is no longer just a source of entertainment; it has become an impactful tool shaping society, culture, and economy. Every year, World Tourism Day is celebrated on September 27, highlighting travel's significant role. This year's theme is "Tourism and Sustainable Change." It directly implies that people now seek journeys benefiting the environment and local communities.
According to a report by Booking.com, both travelers and locals wish for tourism to grow in a healthy manner. While 57% believe tourism positively impacts their area, everyone wants future travel to improve its ways. Let's explore the major changes in the travel world and what travelers now prioritize.
While tourism benefits people, there are challenges experienced by locals. Approximately 48% of travelers believe that their area already has enough tourists. However, as local residents, they face common issues like traffic congestion (38%), litter (35%), overcrowding (30%), and importantly, rising living costs (29%). This means that tourism makes living in their city increasingly expensive.

Locals do not see a solution in restricting tourist numbers, as only 16% of travelers think that way. Instead, they demand better community investment. They believe the government should invest in areas like transportation (38%), waste management (37%), and environmental conservation (32%). They feel such investments can manage tourism and benefit everyone.
Travelers' behavior is now more responsible and positively evolving. Over half (53%) believe tourists respect local customs and traditions, while 54% say tourists support local businesses. Additionally, 73% want their spending to reach the local community, and 77% seek authentic and local culture-based experiences. This indicates travelers' priorities have shifted from mere sightseeing to connecting with community and culture.

Sustainable travel is no longer a minor trend. Globally, 84% of travelers in 2025 consider sustainable travel important. Over the past decade, this priority has rapidly grown. In 2016, only 42% felt they were traveling sustainably, but now 93% want more sustainable options. This illustrates increased awareness of traveling's positive local and environmental impacts.
Changes in travelers' behavior are evident. In 2020, 43% reported turning off their accommodation's AC or heater when not needed, which increased to 67% by 2023. Furthermore, tourists are opting for alternative destinations and off-peak travel times to avoid overcrowding. This not only reduces environmental pressure but also strengthens local communities' engagement with tourism benefits.
