The hosting rights for the ICC Champions Trophy were awarded to Pakistan, but uncertainty looms over the event's venues and schedule. Due to security concerns, the Indian government hasn't permitted its team to travel to Pakistan, prompting considerations for a 'Hybrid Model' tournament format. On November 29, the International Cricket Council (ICC) convened an emergency executive board meeting to address the issue.

What Condition Did Pakistan Lay Down?

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) initially objected to hosting the tournament under the 'Hybrid Model.' However, there's a noticeable softening in their stance. Sources reveal to Aaj Tak that the PCB is now agreeable to the 'Hybrid Model,' though they have outlined two conditions for the ICC.

1.

The PCB insists Lahore be the fallback venue for the finals, and should India not make it to the finals, the championship battle should unfold in Lahore.

2.

The PCB further desires that any ICC tournament India hosts should also adopt the 'Hybrid Model,' allowing Pakistan to play their matches outside of India—a clear message that Pakistan is reluctant to play ICC events on Indian soil.

During the meeting on November 29, the ICC issued a definitive ultimatum to the PCB: either embrace the 'Hybrid Model' or withdraw from the competition. The ICC awaits the PCB's final response, and the next ICC meeting will occur once Pakistan is prepared to submit its reply.

Acceptance of the 'Hybrid Model' would relocate India's matches to the UAE, while the rest remain in Pakistan, retaining hosting rights. If proceedings are postponed, the PCB risks losing hosting fees worth $6 million (approx. ₹50.73 crore).

This could considerably slash PCB's annual revenue, estimated at $35 million (approx. ₹296 crore). Rejection of the 'Hybrid Model' may also vex the ICC as its official broadcaster, Star, might renegotiate their multi-billion-dollar deal.

The tournament is slated for February 19 to March 9. Notably, since the 2008 Mumbai attacks, India has refrained from playing cricket in Pakistan. Making its post-2017 reappearance in the ICC calendar, the Champions Trophy holds historical significance. Pakistan clinched victory in the 2017 edition held in England. It's worth noting that during the Asia Cup 2023 in Pakistan, India played its matches in Sri Lanka under the 'Hybrid Model.'
